The Maria Lai exhibition is part of an initiative launched by Madre at the start of its 2023 programming cycle, under the presidency of Angela Tecce and the directorship of Eva Fabbris: to bring visibility and historiographical rigor to the practices of female artists who worked in the second half of the twentieth century with a radicalism that is often still underrecognized.

She Flickered  In and Out of History is a new video and mixed-media installation by interdisciplinary artist Elisa Giardina Papa (b. Italy; lives and works in New York, U.S., and Sant’Ignazio, Sicily).

This edition investigates how we can reimagine empty church buildings as spaces for civic life, physical well-being and community encounter. Manifesta 16 Ruhr invites you to help us imagine new futures for these urban landmarks and to consider how such spaces might contribute to the social and cultural life of the Ruhr Area’s cities. The Pola Museum of Art is pleased to present The New Vision: Monet and the Contemporary Gaze. In this context, empathy is gaining in importance. It refers to the ability to engage with the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of others. Empathy can help to recognise differences and enable understanding — between individuals as well as between groups and societies.

SKYground invites audiences to consider both the ground of reality and the horizon of imagination, establishing a dialogue between contemporary artistic practices and the multilayered cultural heritage of Mardin. Moving between sky and earth, the individual and the collective, and the past and the future, the biennial traces a conceptual and spatial trajectory across the city and its surrounding landscape. Birds—figures that hold a particular place in the cultural memory of the region—serve as symbolic guides throughout the biennial. Carrying the winds unique to Mardin and the stories embedded in its stone architecture, they map invisible routes between exhibitions, site-specific installations, and public programs.

She Flickered In and Out of History is a video and glass installation that explores the geological, mythological, and political temporalities of the Mediterranean, recounting the tale of an island that emerged from and disappeared into the sea. In 1831, an underwater volcanic eruption gave rise to a basalt formation between Tunisia and Sicily, sparking a violent sovereignty dispute among European powers. Five months later, the island vanished beneath the surface.

On Nervous Grounds uses selected works from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg
to demonstrate how art has created spaces of emotional resonance from the 1970s to the
present day.
