People in Germany are very proud of their roads and highways, but who actually built them? In order to answer this supposedly simple question, Ulf Aminde and the author Manuel Gogos consulted companies and witnesses, searched archives and files: Who was involved in the construction of German roads since World War II? And where did they come from?

Many of them were “guest workers” from Italy, Turkey, or former Yugoslavia. The streets are archives of the history of work and migration in Europe. Every road merges with another one, forming a set of arteries of departures, displacement, hopes, arrivals. Together the roads form a canvas for a social collage, a temporary and active way of remembering and living in a migration society.

In Prizren, for the Autostrada Biennale, curated by Övül Ö. Durmuşoğlu & Joanna Warsza the film and poster Streets of Labor: Monument of Migration is presented at a gas station—one of those places, at the other end of the road, from where some guest workers departed (and still depart) to look for jobs in the north, and where they return to.

»This painting has originally been a digital artwork for a cover of ZEIT Magazin’s Hamburg Edition. I created two intercommunicating works as a comment to the lockdowns and isolations due to Corona pandemic and what this has done to us. The lockdowns are over and fingers crossed they will be forever. I liked the digital works a lot so I decided to transform them into an ‚analog‘ painting as well.«

»Corona and the climate crisis highlight how interconnected our world is spanning from micro to macro, from cells to entire ecosystems, from cities to continents.

Here, PYROCENE II and PYROCENE III, based on the modern ‘fire age’ of fossil fuels and landscape fires, is reshaping our planet with diverse and intense impact on our climate. The clouds are born in simultaneous cause and effect of the hidden inner fire.«

»I made these photographs over the course of five years during which I travelled across America many times, meeting strangers who share DNA with me. These images serve as records of our first meetings, standing in darkness, with only moonlight, starlight and a single flashlight for illumination.«

Laurel Nakadate’s Relations series is inspired by the previous Star Portraits series. In Relations, however, the depicted actors are distant relatives, whom the artist researched through various DNA websites and contacted them for her new project.

»In this work, one of a series of six, fragmented sheets of paper are left unmarked by ink, but are held together by the mending tape, which is alternately adhered to or suspended above the paper. The works elaborate a seemingly endless love letter, a 10,000-word mash-up of segments of letters culled from across history and literature. The source letters for these works span time and place and yet are made to run seamlessly into each other without any reference to their authors. The love letter is repetitive and frantic as the language attempts to lay claim to something solid and precise and yet it seems always on the verge of disintegration. The work negotiates the eternal desire to make one’s love understood by the other.«
