Richter’s pastels are a transformation of her painterly ideas into a work on paper. The process of creating the works involves multifarious testing and learning states. She is intrigued by the possibilities of soft pastels, the vibrancy of the pigments, how the colors flow into each other and thereby build relationships. They are akin to her oil paintings, yet they stem from a completely different work process.

In Daou’s works on paper, the threads of day-to-day life ramify into networks of fleeting moments. The surfaces are fabric-like, dyed in ink, cut, and held together with mending tissue. The forms, and the way in which language hovers around them, allude to Egyptian wall drawings of weeping women as well as to early medical drawings, known as “wound men.” They are produced through a sequence of dance-like movements in which the paper is sliced through, pulled apart, and reassembled. The pieces hang in a tenuous balance, suggestive of both fragility and resilience.

Garrard’s work shows a language of geometric and symbolic forms, which are both personal imaginaries as well as loose interpretations of propositions in quantum physics, such as M-theory and supersymmetry. Everything that is material breaks down at the quantum level into particles, atoms, quarks, strings and vibrations; what we consider to be solid and fixed is intangible. Assimilating these theories with her own experiences of non-physical space that she accesses through meditation informs the drawing’s composition.

Hoffmann’s work deals with human conditions such as solation, affliction, pain, horror, anger, and fear in today’s
digital and globalized world. Starting from her owns body as a woman, she then focuses on the general human form. The fatefulness of the human existence that the artist portrays should, however, not be simply reduced to gender roles; as
t is more an act of feminism.

Kamerić’s Hooked drawing was created parallel to the crocheted nets, which are likewise part of her ongoing Hooked series, which started in 2010. Their creation is a translation of the crocheting into drawings. The net-like structure of the depicted form symbolizes the social captivity women still find themselves in but is also a carrier for a potential future that the artist imagines as an empowering safety net for women rather than a captive one.

Kapwani Kiwanga

Kiwanga’s work Ifa-Organ alludes to Ifa – a binary divination system, mainly practiced in Nigeria, Benin, and their diasporas – and to the barrel organ, originating in Eastern and Central Europe. An Ifa priest in Benin performed a remote consultation at Kiwanga’s request. This divination produced a series of signs that were then transposed onto a card for a barrel organ through perforations. When played, the card produces a repetitive music, which broadcasts the oracle into public space. The perforated card is at once a sonic and visual object. When inactivated by the organ, the card is displayed in the exhibition space, inviting the viewer to decipher the divination codes.

Angelika J. Trojnarski

Trojnarski’s paper collage series Pyrocene is a reaction to the multitude of global and local wildfires, particularly occurring in the last three years, which have reached unprecedented levels with lasting consequences for the earth. The artist employs the power and materiality of fire by igniting the edges of the paper and enriching it with soot. Thereby the clouds simultaneously become the cause and effect of the hidden inner fire.

Anna Witt

Witt’s works on paper Radikal Denken are preceded by the video work Radikal Thinking Central Station Vienna in which the artist filmed travelers and commuters at the newly built central station while they where asked to focus for a moment and imagine ideas they consider as a radical agenda of a either private or political matter. The ideas were anonymously written down afterwards and set together to a manifest, of which her two exhibited works are a part.
