Soft Destructions is a site-specific installation by Anna Witt involving live ASMR performances. ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) is a phenomenon where certain sounds, like whispers or soft tapping, trigger a pleasant tingling sensation, often used to soothe stress and anxiety. In this installation, professional ASMR artists perform gentle, destructive actions on objects scattered throughout the gallery. Visitors, equipped with headphones, experience the amplified sounds of cracking, scraping, and other subtle noises, creating a uniquely intimate and immersive atmosphere. As these performances continue, the accumulating debris from the destruction alters the space, highlighting the paradox of using destructive actions to evoke care and emotional connection. Witt’s work explores this tension, reflecting on contemporary forms of care and the complexity of social connectivity.
