This piece is reminiscent of a map, where ink and repair tape are applied onto handmade paper. What appear to be the traces of coordinates or routes at first glance, are actually a series of written phrases that are interconnected. This piece was originally shown at the Cairo Biennale in 2010. Annabel Daou guides us through the work with two questions: Where are you going? and Where are you coming from? The piece draws from translation theories to consider questions about diaspora and belonging as multilingual encounters that pertain to the
transformation of knowledge (Jaber, 2021). The map was accompanied by an audio piece in which listeners are offered an insight into the myriad of sounds that take place in the urban fabric of the city, creating an alternative aesthetic imaginary of spatial production. The artist plays with the motifs of rupture and repair in her work, where the textual elements serve a double purpose. On one hand the work encourages us to question the agency of our bodies within spaces, and on the other it illuminates how the languages we use determine these geographies.
