Through the application of ink and watercolour on hand cut microfiber Annabel Daou achieves this beautiful dark blue that covers the whole canvas. Then she carefully cuts out letters that protrude out of the paper to spell out “little by little” in a repeated fashion. The repetitive use of phrases and the manipulation of text as an evocative and aesthetic medium is characteristic of the artist’s work. Daou grew up in the war-torn city of Beirut, and sees cities as built out of echoes and the acts of living, thinking, and feeling that are left behind within its confines (Soldi, 2014). Her works explore the tension between rupture and repair, primarily through the use of paper, which is a fragile and malleable material.
