Moldy Lemons #5 are ceramic fruit centrepieces that appear to be molding. The objects are made of glazed majolica (ceramic), symbolising the conflicting temporalities that Sicilian traditions are confronted with. Elisa Gardina Papa’s video installation, U Scantu: A Disorderly Tale, was commissioned for the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). She combines 19th century Sicilian fairy tales and the archives of the Spanish Inquisition to reconstruct the myth of the ‘donne di fora’ –a woman who transcended normative boundaries like man/woman, benevolent/vengeful and rotten/fresh through her position as a heretic– and reimagines these in a current context (Collective, Edinburgh, 2024).
