Kiwanga’s work, Shifting Sands, mimics an hourglass compressed into abstraction. Kiwanga observes how raw materials, in this case sand, remind us of perpetual states of flux. The piece is made with artisanally hand-blown glass and fracking sand. The sculptures are a continuation of her Hour Glass series, presented at the 59th Venice Biennale. These works explore temporality and the politics of material extraction. The hourglass form alludes to the passage of time as well as the delicate quest for balance, while the use of fracking sand for oil extraction—itself a finite resource—highlights the environmental impact of industrial processes.
