Kapwani Kiwanga’s first solo exhibition in the United States, The Sum and Its Parts, took place at the Logan Center in Chicago in 2017. The exhibition features a site-specific mixed-media installation that explores how design and color are used to shape social behaviors. Ceiling fragments with light fixtures lay on the floor, while photographic prints of institutional interiors appear to melt from the walls onto the ground, creating a spatial collage through its fragments. The use of a two-tone color palette mimics the interior designs of workhouses, reformatory schools, and hospitals, which were influenced by the social hygiene movements of the 20th century. Kiwanga consulted the University of Chicago’s Special Collections Library and the work of color design theorist Faber Birren, who pioneered a psychological theory of color that was later applied across a wide range of institutions (University of Chicago, 2017). She creates an environment that immerses viewers in the history of surveillance, where color and design have played central roles.
