Trinket is a site-specific, immersive sculptural installation by Kapwani Kiwanga for the Canada Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The artist used more than seven million glass beads to transform the entire surface — both inner and outer — of the pavilion. Glass beads, known as conteria, were commonly used by European traders in exchanges with Indigenous communities. Kiwanga’s work combines beads of various colors with the raw materials that would have been exchanged for them. These interlocking environments reflect on the aesthetic value of objects, shaped by a complex web of global relations. Kiwanga emphasizes the significance of these seemingly minute glass units. The installation invites visitors to engage with questions of value — how something can hold economic worth in one context while embodying a deeper cultural, social, or spiritual significance in another. Trinket challenges us to reconsider our understanding of value in relation to our colonial past and
globalized society.
