Ab uno disce omnes by Šejla Kamerić addresses the brutal legacy of an all too recent past. The work centres around ongoing forensic efforts towards recovering and identifying remains from mass graves in the wake of the Bosnian War (1992-95). Assembling a vast archive with an overwhelming volume of data and statistics, Kamerić reconciles the legacy of war with the human lives at its centre. This continually evolving database provides a compelling repository of visual evidence through which the complex structures of the war and its aftermath can be traced – whether encountered as a constant stream of information within the mortuary fridge or navigated via the dedicated website. The work was conceived as a living monument to the countless victims, many of whom are still missing more than twenty years later.
