“The work is entitled Embarazada, which means pregnant in Spanish but directly calls to mind the word ‚embarrassed’ in English. This work started with a memory of my childhood. Amongst all the toys and characters that surrounded me, I was obsessed with Pierrot. Instead of happy clowns or Barbie dolls, I was rather driven to Pierrot; especially for his naivety and sadness. The injustice he had to endure, the tragedy that surrounded him, the beauty he possessed was simply fascinating. Pregnancy is a natural process. There is nothing extraordinary about it, but the pregnant woman is often seen as the ‘Other’. Especially in conservative societies, women are still expected to be ‚virgin mothers‘. Pregnant women, even the working ‘strong’ modern women, are under pressure to hide the changes their bodies go through. The pregnant belly should not be obvious, at least not until the late stages, and as soon as the woman gives birth, she should get back into shape, fit for the catwalk. Unfortunately, in the art world we hear and read about successful female artists saying that they chose not to have kids because that would be a sacrifice. According to them it is not possible to be both a mother and an artist. I don’t agree with this reasoning.” Šejla Kamerić
