FREI started as a public action made for CTM – Club Transmediale, Festival for electronic music and related visual art in Berlin, 2004. When visitors entered the festival each night, rather than receiving a stamp with the name of the club, they would be marked with the word “Frei” [Free]. The stamp refers to the existential conditions, such as access to shelter or resources, as well as the universal desire to be free. This work is a continuance of the artist’s examination of the human need to leave a mark, categorize and often leave a scar.
