The work Green, includes a set of 20 colour photographs depicting cacti upon a white background while the leaves have been engraved with the abbreviations of names. As part of the exhibit Kamerić is interested in language and the messages left on the frontiers – be it cacti or borders. On one hand the act of ‘marking the flesh of a plant may seem destructive, but it is also an act of remembering’ (Arsenijević, 2009 in Two Words, Deux Mots). The engravings on plants signify the continuation of a dialogue which envisions alternative futures, amongst people who may not have the same mother tongue. Green pays tribute to the memory of Herzegovina: the political turmoil, the missing persons after the war, and the elites who still use their power to divide ethnic communities. The artist thereby questions for whom memory is being constructed or engraved and for what purpose. Carving the names is an act of remembrance for the absent other (Ibid. 2009). In these photographs Kamerić tries to welcome in a new political subject, a new discourse, and a new dialogue that alters the ways in which the memory of Bosnia and Herzegovina is constructed.
