Šejla Kamerić’s piece KEEP AWAY FROM FIRE mimics the warning sign that is displayed on easily flammable and cheaply made synthetic clothes. To produce this installation, Kamerić carefully detached the labels from fast fashion garments and sewed them back onto these drapes that display the violence of overconsumption and overproduction patterns in modern cities. The title of the work reveals the absurdity of the instructions contained within these small fabric manuals. “After all, there are moments when “keeping away from fire” is not an option – not as worker in low-wage clothing factory burns down, or in war, exile, or general instances of aggression, discrimination” (Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, 2018). In this grandiose display of small yet crucial aspects of daily life within capitalism, Kamerić puts us face to face with the struggles of sustainability in a growing mass of waste that is not just in the materials, but in the discourses contained within them.
