Can refugees be welcome?

Place to Stay is a permanent installation within public space in Mandule, a small town in Croatia. With this piece, Šejla Kamerić confronts the concept of accommodation for mass tourism versus that for refugees. The installation is made up of flat, inoperative, neon advert signs for various types of getaways. Juxtaposed together, the signs are gathered almost collage-like, coming from different directions, in a variety of languages and characters. Only one of the signs glows, at the very bottom of the composition, underscoring its message: “Refugees Welcome”. Kamerić, quite literally, confronts the refugee crises with mass tourism.
