Šejla Kamerić’s neon wall piece, REFUGEES WELCOME features a series of beaming red letters that do not read “Refugees Welcome”, but rather “Refugees WILLcome”. Upon closer look at the LED-sign, the viewer can observe the letters that spell “ill” to perpetually flicker. The work puts viewers in a position to reconsider the issue of migration from a radically humanising lens. As the artist remarked in 2022, “The society, in which we have to discuss whether someone in need (refugees/migrants) should be welcome or not, is ill…Therefore, the letters, which are not working, they blink.” (Kunsthaus Dresden, 2023). This powerful visualisation that Kameric works to convey, posits a sense of fragility and uncertainty in the context of the migration crisis of the 21st Century, further problematising our responses to these events.
