This series is a site-specific public intervention of shared images, posters and stickers that grapples with the mass consumption of war images in the media. The photographs featured in SUMMERISNOTOVER depict close-ups of bomb explosions superimposed with huge block letterings that write out hashtag-like slogans: THROWBACKTHURSDAY, SUMMERISNOTOVER, NOFILTERSKY. An ironic commentary on the often careless combinations of image and text, the work distorts the alleged authenticity of the photograph, while using the exact techniques used in social media to reach larger audiences. It alludes to the start of revolutions and wars which often begin in the summer, the season where we also tend to project our idealised lives onto social media platforms. The huge signs subvert the use of photography as a controlled medium, forming a giant stream of images that remind the viewer that “summer is not over – the war is not over” (e-flux, 2018).
