The installation The Party is Over by Šejla Kamerić exhibited at Kunsthaus Dresden confronts the aftermaths of excess. Nearly 300 pieces of black, torn down clothes are presented, resembling the essence of past souls and the echoes of lost bodies surrounded by graffiti. These remnants become haunting witnesses to fast fashion, a system perpetuated by the comforting illusion that “clothes will eventually be recycled.” But reality shows that Europeans consume almost 26 kilograms of textiles per year and yet less than 1% is ever recycled (Kunsthaus Dresden, 2022). Such garments often end up as waste in landfills across the Balkans which is the Artist’s birthplace. Kamerić’s work is both a lament and a call to action. „We are all part of a system that is broken… The party is over!“ She states. Visitors are invited to collectively challenge overconsumption by wearing the labeled garments, join the #thepartyisover2020 campaign, and take the clothes home.
