A set of white underwear tied up neatly with a red bow that falls down to the floor. This piece by Sejla Kameric is titled We Come with a Bow. In it, the artist began to grapple with the following question: „The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, ‘It’s a girl’, but does it ever end?”. The work builds on the artist’s focus on self-portraits, feminist and gender stereotypes, all of which have been dominant in her practice. More broadly it questions how the identities we carry are carefully crafted and socially constructed as we consider the question which Simone De Bouvoir first grappled with in her 1949 book The Second Sex: what does it mean to be a woman, and who gets to decide? This daring piece teases viewers, pushing us to recognize dominating narratives that lie beneath identities, and how we can try to break from negative patterns of representation.
