In rural Tanzania protective magic by the name of Mbale was made from pieces of sticks and placed at crossroads near villages. Would-be invaders passed by Mbale on their way to a village. When the trespassers arrived, they would see nothing but a termite mound; Mbale had rendered the settlement invisible.
