The installation pink-blue combines Baker-Miller pink paint and blue fluorescent light to create a spatial environment. It features a long corridor where visitors can walk through the materialization of light and color, reflecting on the applications of disciplinary architecture. This work draws inspiration from the research of Alexander Schauss, who, in the 1970s, claimed that Baker-Miller pink had tranquilizing psychological effects on humans. Paradoxically, detention centers painted in this color scheme sometimes exacerbated hostility among inmates (Hampton, 2018). Similarly, blue light has been used in public bathrooms to obscure veins, making it more difficult for individuals to inject drugs. Kapwani subverts these techniques by allowing us to experience their disorienting effects firsthand. pink-blue highlights color as a psychic primer that indirectly monitors spaces, critically examining these social experiments and their broader contexts.
