“From 15th April to 7th June, Kiwanga’s work appears in her first UK solo exhibition at South London Gallery. Her installation is a research into the legacy of 1905-1907 Maji Maji uprisings against German colonial rule in German East Africa. Short audio vignettes, Tanzanian castor oil plants, old newspapers and archival videos guide the visitors across the show.
The art of Canadian artist Kapwani Kiwanga is unique and inspiring. Influenced by earlier studies in anthropology, Kiwanga’s body of work is always a research-based investigation. She creates her works through different media: performances, videos, sound installations, archival images, newspapers and documentaries, which also brought her two BAFTA nominees and awards at international film festivals…”
